Rachisphora

Rachisphora is a genus of insects from the order Lepidoptera, belonging to the family Tortricidae. In agronomic practice, this pest is known for its specific host range and its ability to cause significant economic damage during outbreaks. Understanding its systematic position allows agronomists to select appropriate control measures, utilizing pheromone traps and targeting specific adult activity periods.

The primary crops affected by this pest include members of the Rosaceae family, as well as various ornamental and fruit trees. Larvae (caterpillars) feed primarily on young leaves, flower buds, and ovaries, leading to fruit deformation and a reduction in the overall vigor of the host plant. In orchard and nursery settings, Rachisphora can destroy a significant portion of the vegetative canopy within a short period.

The biology and life cycle of Rachisphora are closely linked to regional climatic conditions. The insect undergoes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Hibernation typically occurs at the larval or pupal stage, protected within silk cocoons or under tree bark. In the spring, as temperatures rise, adult moths emerge, followed by mating and egg-laying on the undersides of leaves or at the base of buds.

The damage caused by Rachisphora is characterized by the rolling of leaves, inside which the larvae create silk-lined protective shelters. Feeding sites show necrotic spots, ragged holes, and premature drop of ovaries. The economic damage stems from direct yield loss and the weakening of plant health, which renders the trees more susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Control strategies involve a combination of agrotechnical and chemical measures:

• Monitoring population levels using pheromone traps throughout the growing season.
• Sanitary pruning and destruction of infested plant material during the autumn.
• Application of biological insecticides during the early larval development stages.
• Chemical treatments with contact-stomach insecticides during periods of peak pest vulnerability.
