Reindeer

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) is a member of the Cervidae family and the order Artiodactyla. While largely considered a livestock animal in northern latitudes, in the context of agriculture and local forage production, they act as wildlife pests that can inflict significant damage on field crops, pastures, and commercial nurseries situated in their migratory paths.

The biology and lifecycle of the reindeer are defined by their migratory nature. They live in herds and cover vast distances throughout the year. Their reproductive cycle, including the autumn rut and spring calving, influences their movement patterns. During periods of forage scarcity, these animals are highly opportunistic and often encroach upon agricultural land to feed on succulent cultivated plants.

Damage to crops is primarily caused by direct consumption and mechanical trampling. Reindeer feed on young grain shoots, vegetables, and the tender buds of ornamental or fruit tree saplings. The destruction of feed crops reduces the total seasonal yield, while broken fences and damaged machinery caused by the animals' presence add to the overall costs.
