Eastern subterranean termite
Reticulitermes hageni
Description
The eastern subterranean termite (Latin: Reticulitermes hageni) is a social insect species belonging to the order Isoptera and the family Rhinotermitidae. These termites are highly organized and live in colonies primarily located in the soil. They are widely recognized as significant economic pests due to their ability to feed on wood and other cellulose-based materials found in agricultural structures and landscapes.
In an agricultural context, Reticulitermes hageni poses a severe threat to timber structures, such as barns, storage sheds, fence posts, and wooden components of equipment shelters. While they primarily target dead wood, in some cases, they can colonize live trees that have been compromised by fungal decay or physical injury, potentially weakening or killing the trees over time.
The biology of these termites is defined by a caste system, which includes workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The worker caste is responsible for the destructive feeding behavior, constantly foraging for cellulose. Their development involves a gradual metamorphosis, and their activity levels are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as soil temperature and moisture availability throughout the seasons.
The damage caused by these insects is often insidious. Termites excavate the wood along the grain, consuming the softer earlywood and leaving the harder latewood layers intact, often resulting in a honeycombed appearance. Because they rarely emerge into the open, their presence is often only detected through the construction of mud tubes—tunnels built of soil and saliva used to navigate above-ground areas.
Effective management strategies against Reticulitermes hageni focus on prevention and chemical exclusion. Essential practices include:
- Maintaining a physical separation between wood structures and the soil surface.
- Treating the soil perimeter with approved termiticides to create a continuous barrier.
- Applying borate-based wood preservatives to lumber before and during construction.
- Reducing moisture accumulation around foundations to make the environment less attractive to colonies.
