The biology of this species is defined by its aquatic lifestyle. The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: eggs are typically laid in the water, followed by larval stages, pupation, and the adult phase. Adults are strong flyers, enabling them to colonize new irrigation reservoirs and hydroponic tanks rapidly during the migration season.

The damage caused by Rhantus grapii is often indirect but significant. Larvae are voracious predators that move through root zones in hydroponic systems, causing mechanical damage to plant tissues. This physical disruption can lead to secondary infections, root rot, and stunted growth in sensitive aquatic or semi-aquatic crops.

In addition to root damage, the presence of these beetles in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) can interfere with filtration equipment and compete with stock for food resources. Their ability to hide in substrate or equipment makes them difficult to eradicate once a population is established in a controlled environment.
