Root mealybug

Rhizoecus dianthi

Description

The root mealybug (Rhizoecus dianthi) is a small insect belonging to the family Pseudococcidae. Unlike its surface-dwelling cousins, this pest thrives beneath the soil surface, feeding exclusively on the roots of plants. Its small size and white waxy coating make it blend in with soil particles, often leading to delayed detection until significant damage has occurred.

This pest affects a wide range of hosts, primarily ornamental plants grown in containers, such as cacti, succulents, ferns, and various greenhouse crops. The insects inhabit the root zone, where they create tunnels and feed on root tissues. They are particularly problematic in nurseries and home collections where high-density planting creates favorable conditions for their spread.

The life cycle involves the female laying eggs in small, waxy masses within the soil. After hatching, the crawlers move through the substrate to find succulent roots to feed upon. Their development is favored by consistently warm temperatures and moderate soil moisture. The absence of natural predators in indoor or greenhouse settings allows populations to build up rapidly.

Infestation symptoms include stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and persistent wilting despite regular irrigation. Because the damage occurs on the roots, the plant loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients efficiently. Severe infestations result in extensive necrosis of the root system, ultimately leading to plant death if left unmanaged.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Systemic insecticide drenches applied to the soil to reach the root zone.
  • Strict quarantine measures for all new plant additions to the collection.
  • Repotting heavily infested plants after careful washing of the roots.
  • Using high-quality, sterilized potting media for all container plants.
  • Monitoring soil surface and roots during regular maintenance and inspections.
