Florida root mealybug

The Florida root mealybug (Rhizoecus floridanus) is a significant soil-dwelling pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. Unlike common mealybugs found on foliage, this species lives primarily below the soil surface, making it extremely difficult to detect until the plant exhibits signs of severe decline.

This pest has a wide host range, primarily affecting indoor potted plants, ornamental nursery crops, succulents, and palms. Because it feeds on roots, it is frequently introduced into greenhouse environments through infested soil or contaminated plant material. Once established, it can spread rapidly across a collection through shared irrigation systems or soil movement.

The life cycle of the Florida root mealybug involves several nymphal stages that feed on the root system. Females produce small, white, waxy, cotton-like masses in the soil, which serve as protective sites for their eggs. The insects thrive in well-drained, moderately moist soil conditions, which are typical for many cultivated greenhouse plants.

Damage caused by this mealybug manifests as stunted growth, general chlorosis, and wilting despite adequate irrigation. By feeding on root tissues, the pests weaken the plant's vascular system, causing it to lose its ability to take up nutrients and water. In advanced infestations, the root system is covered in a white, fluffy coating, often followed by root rot and secondary pathogen colonization.

Effective control strategies include:

• Inspecting roots of new plants before introducing them to the main collection.
• Using systemic insecticides that can be applied as a soil drench to target the root zone.
• Replacing infested soil and thoroughly cleaning or discarding heavily damaged root systems.
• Sterilizing containers and using sterile, high-quality potting media to prevent re-infestation.
• Monitoring soil moisture levels to avoid the overly dry conditions that these pests often prefer.
