Green metallic ant

The green metallic ant (Rhytidoponera metallica) is a species of the order Hymenoptera, belonging to the family Formicidae. Recognized for its distinct metallic, iridescent sheen, it is a common ant species in the Australian region. In agricultural and horticultural contexts, it is increasingly regarded as a nuisance or pest due to its interaction with commercial and ornamental crops.

While they do not consume plant tissue as their primary food source, these ants are significant agricultural pests due to their mutualistic relationship with sap-sucking insects. They actively tend to aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs, protecting them from natural predators like ladybirds and lacewings in exchange for honeydew. This protection allows pest populations to reach damaging levels quickly.

The biology of Rhytidoponera metallica is unique because it lacks a morphologically distinct queen; instead, worker ants, called gamergates, carry out reproduction. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. They are highly aggressive and possess a painful sting, which complicates manual weeding and harvesting operations in infested areas.

The damage to crops is primarily indirect but severe. By fostering sap-sucking insects, they facilitate the spread of viral plant diseases and promote the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and blocks sunlight, hindering photosynthesis. Furthermore, heavy nest building can disturb the root systems of young seedlings and delicate ornamental plants, causing growth stuntedness.

Effective management strategies require targeting the source of the infestation and the food supply. Integrated pest management (IPM) is recommended, including:

• Application of specialized ant baits to eliminate the colony.
• Use of sticky bands on tree trunks to prevent access to plant foliage.
• Control of honeydew-producing insects using insecticidal soaps or systemic treatments.
• Regular soil cultivation around base areas to disrupt nest integrity.
