Kondon's root mealybug

Ripersiella kondonis, previously classified under the genus Rhizoecus, is a cryptic pest belonging to the family Pseudococcidae. Unlike foliage-feeding mealybugs, this species thrives in the root zone, making it a difficult and often overlooked adversary for both professional growers and indoor plant enthusiasts.

This mealybug targets a wide variety of plants, showing a strong preference for succulents, cacti, and various ornamental greenhouse species. By feeding exclusively on the root system, it drains vital sap, which leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and in severe cases, the collapse of the plant's entire root architecture.

The biology of Ripersiella kondonis is characterized by subterranean reproduction. Females lay eggs in distinctive white, waxy secretions that resemble cotton wool buried within the soil or clinging to the roots. The life cycle is continuous in indoor environments, allowing the population to spread rapidly between pots through contaminated potting mix, irrigation water, or even via shared drainage saucers.

The damage caused is twofold: direct loss of nutrients due to sap sucking, and indirect harm caused by the creation of entry points for opportunistic pathogens like fungi and bacteria. Symptoms often include the sudden wilting of a plant despite adequate watering, a lack of new foliage, and the presence of suspicious white, granular, or filamentous material found when inspecting the root ball.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Systemic insecticides applied as soil drenches are the most reliable method for targeting hidden populations. When heavy infestations are identified, the best practice is to dispose of the old substrate, wash the roots thoroughly in an insecticidal solution, repot into sterilized soil, and maintain the affected plant in quarantine until it is fully recovered.
