Description
The South American rice stem borer (Rupela albinella) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is considered one of the primary threats to rice cultivation in Central and South America, often causing severe economic losses in infested paddy fields.
This pest is highly host-specific and primarily affects rice (Oryza sativa). The larvae are internal feeders that tunnel into the stems of the rice plant. Their feeding activity significantly impairs the development of the plant, often leading to stunted growth or total failure in grain production.
The biological cycle of Rupela albinella consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in clusters, often covering them with scales. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately seek entry into the rice stalks. The insect spends most of its life cycle protected inside the plant tissue, which is a key factor in its survival.
The characteristic damage caused by this moth is known as "whitehead." Because the larvae sever the vascular tissue inside the stem, the developing panicle loses its nutrient supply, turns white, and becomes empty. This prevents the formation of grain, directly reducing the harvest yield and grain quality across the field.
