Sceliodes

Description

Sceliodes (scientific name Sceliodes cordalis) is a specialized agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to Solanaceous crops, primarily targeting eggplants (Solanum melongena) in various regions where it is established.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage of the moth. Once the larvae hatch from eggs deposited on the surface of the fruit, they burrow directly into the interior of the eggplant. Inside, they consume the pulp, creating internal tunnels and galleries that make the fruit unmarketable and susceptible to rot.

The biological cycle of Sceliodes cordalis consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths are typically nocturnal, making monitoring difficult without specialized equipment. The pest's ability to complete its larval development entirely hidden within the fruit provides a significant survival advantage, protecting it from many topical chemical treatments.

Symptoms of infestation are usually visible as entry holes on the skin of the eggplant, often surrounded by frass (larval waste). These entry points facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, leading to rapid decay of the fruit. In severe cases, infestations can result in total crop loss if preventative measures are not implemented early in the growing season.

Effective management of Sceliodes requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance and maximize efficacy:

  • Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and time insecticide applications precisely.
  • Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested fruits to prevent larval maturation.
  • Application of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which target the larvae before they bore into the fruit.
  • Crop rotation strategies to reduce the local population density of the pest in the soil.
  • Use of systemic insecticides only when necessary, targeted specifically at the egg-laying period.
