Description

Important note: Schistosoma guineensis is not a plant pest or an agricultural threat. This biological entity belongs to the class Trematoda and is a specialized human parasite that causes intestinal schistosomiasis.

Systematic classification: Order Strigeidida, family Schistosomatidae. These organisms follow a complex lifecycle that necessitates the alternation of hosts. Humans serve as the definitive hosts, while freshwater gastropod snails, primarily of the genus Bulinus, act as intermediate hosts.

The biology and lifecycle take place in aquatic environments. Parasite eggs are excreted from the human body in feces and enter freshwater bodies. There, miracidia emerge and penetrate the snails. After a period of asexual reproduction within the snail, cercariae are released, which can penetrate human skin upon water contact.

The damage caused by this parasite involves chronic infection leading to inflammatory processes in the human intestine and liver. Tissue damage may result in fibrosis and organ dysfunction. Unlike typical agricultural pests, this species does not attack crop root systems, leaves, or fruits.
