Schistosoma mekongi

It is essential to clarify that Schistosoma mekongi is not a plant pest or an agricultural pathogen. It is a parasitic trematode belonging to the Schistosomatidae family. While it does not damage crops or soil fertility, it poses a severe occupational health risk to farmers and agricultural workers operating in specific regions of Southeast Asia.

The biological cycle of this parasite is dependent on freshwater snails of the genus Tricula aperta, which serve as intermediate hosts. Inside the snail, the parasite undergoes asexual multiplication, eventually releasing infectious larvae known as cercariae into the surrounding water. These larvae are highly motile and seek out mammalian hosts.

Transmission occurs when human skin comes into contact with contaminated water. For agricultural activities such as irrigation, wetland farming, or flood-field cultivation, the water often contains these infective larvae. Upon skin contact, the parasite penetrates the dermis and enters the bloodstream to complete its life cycle within the host's vessels.

The damage caused by Schistosoma mekongi is strictly limited to human health, specifically leading to a disease known as Mekong schistosomiasis. Chronic infection causes inflammatory responses in the liver, spleen, and digestive system, which can significantly incapacitate the workforce and hinder agricultural productivity in affected areas.

Preventive measures for agricultural workers in the Mekong basin focus on reducing exposure:

• Use of protective gear, such as high-quality rubber boots and waterproof overalls, when working in irrigation canals.
• Implementing effective water treatment systems for irrigation and farm facilities.
• Regular health screenings for employees working in high-risk zones.
• Public education on the risks of entering freshwater bodies in endemic regions.
