The Japanese blood fluke (Schistosoma japonicum) is a species of parasitic trematode within the order Strigeidida and the family Schistosomatidae. It is important to note that this organism is not a plant pest; rather, it is a significant medical and veterinary concern that directly impacts the safety and efficiency of agricultural labor in endemic areas.

The organism's life cycle is strictly dependent on aquatic environments, making rice paddies an ideal habitat. Its intermediate hosts are amphibious snails belonging to the genus Oncomelania.
