The life cycle requires specific intermediate hosts, typically freshwater snails of the genus Bulinus. After eggs are shed into water, they hatch into miracidia that infect snails. Following a period of asexual reproduction, cercariae are released into the water, where they wait to penetrate the skin of humans, thereby continuing the infection cycle.

The damage caused by Schistosoma haematobium is strictly confined to human health. While it does not damage crops, its presence in irrigation systems in tropical regions represents a significant occupational hazard for agricultural workers. The risk arises from direct skin contact with infested water during irrigation maintenance or field work, which necessitates stringent safety awareness.

Strategies include maintaining flow in irrigation channels, periodic drainage to disrupt snail habitats, and the implementation of personal protective equipment for workers.
