Description

Systematic position. Schoenobius is a genus of moths belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. These insects are well-known agricultural pests, specifically recognized for their destructive impact on rice production in various parts of the world.

Affected crops. The primary host plant for this pest is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). In many tropical and subtropical agricultural landscapes, Schoenobius larvae also infest wild rice varieties and related aquatic grasses, which serve as natural reservoirs for the pest during the off-season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult females typically deposit their eggs in clusters on the leaves, often covering them with protective anal hairs. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the rice stems, where they undergo their development while feeding on the internal plant tissues.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae are notorious for causing "dead heart" symptoms, where the central leaf of the rice plant dries up and dies. When the infestation occurs at the heading stage, it results in the development of "white heads," which are empty and grainless. This leads to substantial reductions in crop yield and market value.

Management and control. Successful management of Schoenobius requires an integrated approach that combines biological and chemical methods:

  • Implementation of resistant or tolerant rice cultivars.
  • Water level management in rice paddies to disrupt the larval lifecycle.
  • Regular field scouting and monitoring using pheromone traps.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during peak moth emergence periods to minimize crop damage.
