Description

Scirpophaga is a genus of moths belonging to the family Crambidae within the order Lepidoptera. The most economically devastating species within this group is Scirpophaga incertulas, commonly known as the yellow stem borer, which is recognized as a major limiting factor in global rice production.

This pest is primarily associated with rice crops (Oryza sativa). Its development is closely synchronized with the phenology of the rice plant, making it a persistent challenge in irrigated rice ecosystems across tropical and subtropical regions where this staple crop is cultivated intensively.

The life cycle of the stem borer consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult females lay eggs in clusters on the leaves, covering them with anal hairs to protect them from desiccation and predators. After hatching, the larvae bore into the stem of the plant, where they feed on the internal tissues throughout their larval stage.

The damage caused by Scirpophaga is most destructive when larvae penetrate the stems. Early infestation during the vegetative stage results in "deadhearts," where the central shoot dies. Infestation during the reproductive stage leads to "whiteheads," where the panicles become empty and sterile, resulting in direct grain yield loss.

Control strategies for Scirpophaga require an integrated approach (IPM). This includes the use of pheromone traps for monitoring populations, the planting of resistant or tolerant rice varieties, and the destruction of rice stubble to disrupt the wintering cycle. Chemical control is often reserved for peak infestation periods, focusing on the use of systemic insecticides to target larvae inside the stem.
