Sugarcane top borer

The sugarcane top borer (Scirpophaga excerptalis) is a highly destructive moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is recognized as a major pest of sugarcane crops, primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions where it can cause severe economic losses by attacking the growing points of the plants.

The life cycle of this pest progresses through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs on the underside of leaves, masking them with hairs from their anal tuft. Once the larvae hatch, they quickly tunnel into the midrib of the leaf and then bore down into the spindle or the growing point of the sugarcane stalk, which makes them extremely difficult to control with conventional sprays.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage boring into the central shoot. This activity leads to the characteristic symptom known as "dead heart," where the central leaf whorl dies. The plant responds by developing lateral branches, which stunts its vertical growth and severely reduces both the cane tonnage and the sugar content within the stalks.

In addition to direct physiological damage, the boreholes created by the larvae serve as entry points for various fungal and bacterial pathogens. This infestation pattern results in weakened stalks that are prone to breakage and reduced juice quality, significantly impacting the efficiency of industrial sugar extraction processes.

Effective management of the sugarcane top borer requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Strategies include:

• The deployment of biological control agents, particularly egg parasitoids like Trichogramma species.
• Cultivating resistant or tolerant sugarcane varieties that can withstand larval pressure.
• Proper disposal of crop debris to eliminate pupal overwintering sites.
• Regular field monitoring to time the release of natural enemies or the application of selective insecticides.
