Description

The Yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas) is a destructive pest of rice crops belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is considered one of the most serious threats to rice production in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, significantly impacting food security and agricultural productivity.

The biological cycle of the moth involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid in clusters on the underside of leaves, protected by anal hair tufts from the female moth. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately seek out the rice stems, boring into them to feed on internal plant tissues. This hidden development makes the pest particularly challenging to detect in the early stages.

The damage caused by Scirpophaga incertulas is characterized by two distinct phases. During the vegetative stage, the larvae sever the central shoot, causing it to wither and die, which is known as "dead heart." During the reproductive stage, their feeding causes the panicles to become white and empty, a condition referred to as "whitehead," leading to substantial grain yield reduction.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as synchronous planting, proper water management, and the destruction of rice stubble are essential to disrupt the pest's lifecycle. Additionally, maintaining field hygiene helps in reducing the overwintering population of the larvae and pupae within the field environment.
