Description
The yellow stem borer (lat. Scirpophaga xanthogastrella) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is widely recognized as a serious economic pest affecting agricultural crops, particularly in regions where sugarcane is cultivated on an industrial scale.
The primary host plant for this species is sugarcane. The larvae of the yellow stem borer are internal feeders, boring into the stalk of the plant. This boring behavior provides the larvae with protection from predators and environmental stressors, while simultaneously causing internal tissue damage that is difficult to remediate.
The biological cycle of the pest consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves, covering them with anal tufts. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately migrate to the stalks to begin their destructive phase. The number of generations per year is highly dependent on local climatic factors such as temperature and humidity.
Damage caused by the yellow stem borer is typically characterized by the drying of the central shoot, a condition known as "dead heart." This symptom prevents normal plant growth, stunts the development of the stalk, and significantly reduces the total yield and quality of sugar content in the harvested crop, leading to substantial financial losses.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach (IPM) to maintain pest populations below economic injury levels. Essential practices include the selection of resistant cultivars, destruction of crop residues immediately after harvest to eliminate overwintering sites, and the release of egg parasitoids. Chemical intervention should be reserved as a last resort due to the internal feeding nature of the larvae, which limits the efficacy of foliar sprays.
