Description
The genus Scopelodes belongs to the family Limacodidae, commonly known as slug moths, within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are well-known for their unique larvae, which resemble slugs or small fleshy fruits. The adult moths are typically robust with dense scaling, providing camouflage against the bark of trees in their native habitats.
These pests primarily target tropical and subtropical plants, including tea bushes, oil palms, coffee trees, and various orchard crops. The larvae are generalist feeders, meaning they can thrive on a wide range of host plants, which makes them a significant concern for commercial plantations in Southeast Asia and other tropical regions.
The biological life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars while feeding aggressively on foliage. Pupation occurs within tough, woody-like cocoons often attached to twigs or stems, which provides protection from predators and environmental stress.
Damage caused by Scopelodes includes extensive skeletonization of leaves and the destruction of tender young shoots. A distinct feature of these caterpillars is the presence of urticating (stinging) hairs on their bodies, which can cause severe skin irritation or allergic reactions in humans upon contact, making manual removal risky without protective gear.
