Description
Scotinophara is a genus of stink bugs belonging to the family Pentatomidae. Among its species, Scotinophara coarctata, commonly known as the black rice bug, is a significant agricultural pest. It primarily causes severe damage to rice crops, posing a serious threat to food security in rice-growing regions globally, especially in tropical climates.
The insect feeds on a wide range of graminaceous crops, but rice (Oryza sativa) remains its primary host. The bugs utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from the base of the stems, especially during the vegetative stage. This feeding behavior drains the plant of essential nutrients, weakening its structural integrity and metabolic processes.
The biology of Scotinophara is characterized by a relatively fast life cycle in favorable humid conditions. Females deposit egg masses on the lower surface of rice leaves. The development from egg to adult proceeds through five nymphal stages (instars) that resemble the adults but lack functional wings. Adults are dark-colored, enabling them to hide effectively in the dense canopy of rice plants.
Damage caused by these insects is frequently described as "bugburn." Initially, the plant may show yellowing of the leaves, followed by stunting and death of tillers. During the reproductive phase, heavy infestations result in empty panicles or poorly filled grains, leading to drastic yield reductions, sometimes reaching up to 80-90% in uncontrolled outbreaks.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Scotinophara. Cultural practices, such as draining rice fields to expose nymphs to predators and sunlight, are highly effective. Furthermore, chemical control using systemic insecticides is recommended when population thresholds are exceeded. Monitoring through light traps is also a standard practice for timely intervention.
