Rice black bug

The Rice black bug (Scotinophara cinerea) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This insect is a major concern for rice producers globally, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where the combination of high humidity and continuous rice cropping provides ideal conditions for its proliferation.

The primary host plant is rice (Oryza sativa), although the bug can survive on various wild grasses when rice is unavailable. These insects are highly mobile and tend to aggregate in large numbers at the base of rice hills, making them elusive during the early stages of an infestation when significant damage to the crop has not yet become visible.

The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Female bugs lay eggs in clusters on the lower surfaces of leaves or near the stem base. Development time from egg to adult is highly dependent on ambient temperature. The nymphs resemble the adults but are wingless and typically feed in the same locations, contributing to the cumulative stress on the plant.

Feeding damage is caused by the sucking mouthparts of both nymphs and adults. As they extract sap from the phloem, they inject toxic saliva, leading to symptoms known as "bug burn." The affected plants display chlorosis, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the entire hill may collapse. Grain yield is substantially reduced due to the formation of unfilled or spotted grains.

Effective management strategies for Scotinophara cinerea require a multi-faceted approach.
