Description
The black rice bug (Scotinophara lurida) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. Adult insects are characterized by their small, shield-shaped, dark-colored bodies, usually ranging from 8 to 10 mm in length, which allow them to blend into the base of rice plants.
The primary host for this pest is rice, although it can also survive on various wild grasses. It is particularly prevalent in humid tropical and subtropical regions. The bug is known for its ability to multiply rapidly under favorable environmental conditions, leading to severe outbreaks that devastate rice fields.
The life cycle of Scotinophara lurida consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs in clusters on the leaves or stems of host plants. The nymphs go through five instars before reaching adulthood. The insects usually overwinter as adults in the soil, debris, or weeds around the field.
Damage occurs when both nymphs and adults suck sap from the stems, leaves, and panicles of the rice plant. This feeding behavior causes plant stunting, yellowing, and the characteristic “hopper burn” effect, where plants wither and die.
