Description
The bronze click beetle (Selatosomus aeneus) is a member of the Elateridae family, commonly found in agricultural landscapes across Eurasia. The adult beetle is easily recognized by its shiny, metallic appearance, which can shimmer in bronze, copper, or green tones. While the adults feed on foliage, the primary economic damage is caused by their subterranean larvae.
The life cycle of this beetle is complex and spans several years, primarily spent in the larval stage known as the wireworm. These larvae are slender, cylindrical, and heavily sclerotized, allowing them to navigate through dense soil with ease. They typically develop in the soil, moving vertically according to moisture and temperature gradients throughout the seasons.
The pest poses a significant threat to various agricultural crops, including cereals, maize, sugar beets, potatoes, and vegetable crops. The larvae are generalist feeders and attack germinating seeds, young roots, and the subterranean parts of stems. By consuming these vital plant parts, they cause substantial yield losses and uneven stand establishment.
Damage is characterized by irregular holes and tunnels bored into roots and tubers, which weakens the plant and often leads to secondary fungal infections. In extreme infestations, fields can suffer from complete stand failure, requiring reseeding. The high mobility and long life cycle of wireworms make them persistent pests that are difficult to eradicate completely.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, maintaining good drainage, and deep autumn tillage are critical in reducing larval populations. Additionally, applying insecticides as seed treatments or granular soil formulations during planting provides a necessary layer of protection for high-risk crops.
