Description

Systematic position. The genus Setora belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Limacodidae, commonly known as slug moths. The species Setora nitens is widely recognized in tropical agriculture as a significant defoliating pest of various economic crops.

Host crops. These insects primarily infest woody perennials in tropical and subtropical regions. Key host plants include oil palm, coconut palm, cocoa, coffee, tea, and a variety of fruit-bearing trees. Their presence often leads to widespread devastation in plantation environments.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Larvae, commonly known as stinging caterpillars, are characterized by their flattened, slug-like appearance and prominent dorsal spines that can inject irritating substances. Development cycles are heavily influenced by temperature and precipitation levels in their native habitat.

Damage and severity. The primary injury is caused by the larval stage, which feeds voraciously on leaves. By stripping the foliage of host trees, Setora significantly impairs the tree's ability to undergo photosynthesis. Heavy infestations result in severe canopy loss, leading to a substantial decrease in fruit production and, in cases of repeated defoliation, the eventual death of the tree.

Control measures. Effective management requires a combination of strategies:

  • Manual removal of infested leaves in young plantations.
  • Application of biological control agents, such as baculoviruses or entomopathogenic fungi.
  • Targeted application of approved insecticides when economic threshold levels are reached.
  • Maintenance of natural predator populations to ensure long-term balance.
