Description
The Nettle caterpillar (Setora nitens) is a significant pest belonging to the Limacodidae family, order Lepidoptera. The larvae are characterized by a slug-like, flattened appearance and are covered in stinging hairs, which contain toxins that can cause severe skin irritation and pain upon contact with humans.
This pest primarily attacks tropical and subtropical plants. The most severe economic losses are reported in oil palm plantations, coconut palms, and various fruit trees, including cocoa, coffee, mango, and several citrus species, leading to reduced agricultural productivity.
The lifecycle of the insect follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Females lay eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, as the caterpillars feed voraciously on the plant foliage to fuel their development.
The damage caused by the larvae manifests as leaf skeletonization. Initially, the caterpillars consume only the leaf tissue between the veins, but as they mature, they consume the entire leaf lamina. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, stunted tree growth, decreased yields, and in extreme cases, the death of young seedlings.
Control strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance:
- Regular monitoring of population levels using pheromone traps.
- Manual removal and destruction of egg clusters and larval aggregations on young trees.
- Application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
- Use of selective insecticides during periods of peak population outbreaks.
- Conservation and promotion of natural predators and parasitoid wasps in the plantation area.
