Description
The citrus whitefly (Singhiella citrifolii) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized as a major threat to citrus production globally, capable of causing substantial economic losses in both commercial orchards and greenhouse environments.
This pest primarily infests plants of the genus Citrus, including lemon, orange, and grapefruit trees. The insect thrives in warm, humid climates, where it can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, making it a persistent challenge for orchard management programs.
The life cycle begins when eggs are deposited on the abaxial side of the host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars, during which they remain attached to the foliage. These stages are characterized by the production of a scale-like covering, followed by the emergence of winged adults that facilitate the spread of the infestation.
Damage caused by Singhiella citrifolii is twofold. Direct damage results from the extraction of phloem sap, which weakens the plant and stunts new growth. Indirect damage is caused by the excretion of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, coating the leaves in a black layer that inhibits photosynthesis and ruins the fruit quality.
