Description
Systematic position: Singhiella simplex belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Known commonly as the Ficus whitefly, this insect is a specialized pest that has gained significant attention globally due to its rapid spread and severe impact on ornamental Ficus species.
Host plants: The pest primarily targets species within the genus Ficus. Ficus benjamina (weeping fig) is the most susceptible host and is frequently attacked, leading to extensive damage in urban landscaping, nursery production, and indoor ornamental plant collections.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the egg stage, four larval instars (nymphs), and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid on the underside of young leaves. Upon hatching, the first instar nymphs crawl to find a suitable feeding site, where they settle and remain stationary through the subsequent nymphal stages until reaching adulthood.
Damage and economic impact: Feeding by nymphs causes chlorosis, leaf yellowing, and severe defoliation of the infested plants. As they feed, whiteflies excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis, causing long-term health decline and severely compromising the aesthetic value of the trees.
Control measures: Managing Singhiella simplex requires a multi-faceted approach. Chemical control using systemic insecticides applied as soil drenches or foliar sprays is often necessary to reach the pests hidden under the foliage. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including the introduction of natural enemies like Encarsia wasps, are highly recommended to keep populations below damaging thresholds in managed environments.
