Singhius

Systematic position. The genus Singhius belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aleyrodidae. These small insects are specialized sap-sucking pests that inhabit various plant species. They are taxonomically related to other whiteflies, and their identification is largely based on the specific microscopic features of the puparium stage.

Host plants and damage symptoms. The pest primarily targets ornamental, greenhouse, and various vegetable crops. Both larvae and adults extract cell sap from leaves. The typical damage includes the development of chlorotic spots, leaf curling, stunted growth, and a general decline in plant vigor, leading to significant yield losses in severe cases.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of eggs, several larval instars, and adults. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. First-instar larvae, known as crawlers, actively move across the plant surface before settling to feed. The speed of the life cycle is highly dependent on temperature and humidity conditions in greenhouse environments.

Harmfulness. Apart from direct feeding damage, Singhius produces honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This colonization inhibits photosynthesis and reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of crops. Furthermore, these pests are known as potential vectors for various plant viruses, posing an additional threat to greenhouse health.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated approach:

• Regular field scouting using yellow sticky traps to detect early infestations.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts.
• Application of systemic or contact insecticides when population levels exceed the economic threshold.
• Use of biological control agents such as predatory mites or parasitic wasps.
• Maintaining optimal greenhouse hygiene and climate regulation to minimize pest population growth.
