Description

The ash whitefly (Siphoninus phillyreae) is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. Originally native to the Mediterranean and Middle East, it has become a serious concern globally, affecting a wide range of forest, landscape, and fruit-bearing trees.

The pest targets various host plants, including ash, pomegranate, citrus, pear, quince, and olive. By congregating on the undersides of leaves, both nymphs and adults extract sap, which causes the foliage to lose vitality, turn yellow, and eventually drop prematurely if the infestation is severe.

The life cycle of the ash whitefly involves several developmental stages, starting from eggs deposited on the leaf underside, progressing through three nymphal instars, and culminating in the winged adult form. The nymphs are easily recognized by the presence of waxy, tube-like structures or siphons on their dorsal surface, which provide protection.

Damage is characterized by heavy sap loss and the production of honeydew. This sticky substance encourages the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that turns the leaves black and blocks sunlight. This inhibits photosynthesis, severely impacting the tree's health, reducing fruit quality, and making the plant look unsightly in landscapes.

Effective management strategies for controlling the ash whitefly include:

  • Biological control through the introduction or preservation of natural enemies, such as the parasitic wasp Encarsia inaron.
  • Application of systemic or contact insecticides during peak hatching periods of the nymphs.
  • Cultural practices like proper pruning to ensure tree vigor and better spray coverage.
  • Regular monitoring of the undersides of leaves to detect infestations before they reach critical levels.
