Description
The Ash whitefly (Siphoninus phillyreae) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It has gained international attention as a significant agricultural pest capable of causing substantial damage to both ornamental and commercial fruit crops.
This species has a wide host range, primarily targeting woody plants. Key host plants include pome fruits like apples and pears, citrus species, pomegranate, olive trees, and various ash (Fraxinus) species, which are highly susceptible to infestation in urban and rural environments.
The life cycle of the Ash whitefly includes the egg stage, four larval instars, and the adult stage. The insect is uniquely characterized by the presence of wax-like tubes secreted by the larvae, which protect them during development. The rapid turnover of generations allows the population to reach damaging levels very quickly.
Damage is caused by both direct feeding and indirect consequences. By extracting phloem sap, the whitefly causes premature leaf senescence and defoliation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the overall vigor of the host plant.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. The most successful strategy globally has been classical biological control, utilizing parasitoid wasps such as Encarsia inaron. Cultural practices, such as proper irrigation and pruning to improve canopy aeration, combined with judicious use of horticultural oils and systemic insecticides, are recommended to maintain low population levels.
