The One-eyed Sphinx (Smerinthus cerisyi) is a moth species belonging to the family Sphingidae, order Lepidoptera. While primarily recognized for its aesthetic appeal, in some ecosystems, it acts as a foliage-feeding pest that can impact specific deciduous tree species.
The host range of this insect is primarily restricted to plants in the Salicaceae family. The larvae (caterpillars) feed extensively on the foliage of various species of willows (Salix) and poplars (Populus), and occasionally quaking aspen. They are most active during the spring and summer months when foliage is most abundant.
The lifecycle follows a standard transformation pattern: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on host leaves, and upon hatching, the larvae undergo five distinct instars. Pupation typically occurs underground, where the insect remains throughout the winter season in a dormant state.
The damage is caused by the caterpillars, which consume leaf tissue. While an individual larva might not cause significant harm, a large population can cause localized defoliation. This process may lead to reduced tree vigor, slowed growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, especially in stressed or young nursery trees.
