Systematic position: The Twin-spotted sphinx (Smerinthus jamaicensis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. It is a large moth characterized by striking blue eyespots on its hindwings, which serve as a defensive mechanism to startle potential predators when the wings are suddenly exposed.
Host plants: This pest primarily affects various deciduous trees and shrubs. Common hosts include willow, poplar, birch, elm, and alder species. In orchards or landscape settings, it may also attack plants in the Rosaceae family, such as apple and cherry trees, potentially damaging foliage during the larval stage.
