Biology and life cycle: The colony life cycle begins with a nuptial flight, where queens establish new mounds in soil. These mounds serve as temperature-regulated environments for larval development. The colony structure is highly social, with specialized castes (workers, soldiers, and reproductives) ensuring rapid growth and defense of the mound territory.

Affected crops: These ants pose a significant threat to a wide variety of agricultural crops, including corn, soybeans, sorghum, and various horticultural plants. They are particularly damaging to germinating seeds and young seedlings, as they actively consume the endosperm or tender stems, causing significant stand loss and requiring replanting.

Damage and economic impact: The primary economic damage is caused by the ant's habit of tending sap-sucking insects like aphids and whiteflies.
