Systematic position: The Thief ant, Solenopsis molesta, belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These tiny insects are notorious for their small size, which allows them to invade tiny crevices and establish colonies in extremely secluded areas, making them a challenging pest to manage in agricultural settings.
Biology and development: Colonies are typically polygynous, meaning they house multiple queens, which contributes to their rapid reproduction and resilient population structure. They often establish nests in soil, rock crevices, or near the root zones of plants, navigating through narrow tunnels to forage for food sources both inside and outside of buildings.
Crops affected: This species is a generalist feeder. It affects a wide range of horticultural and vegetable crops, including tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various cucurbits.
