Jewel beetle

The genus Sphenoptera belongs to the jewel beetle family (Buprestidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are significant wood-boring pests whose larvae develop inside the stems, trunks, or roots of various plants, making them notoriously difficult to detect until substantial damage has already occurred.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including stone fruit trees such as apricots, peaches, and plums, as well as various herbaceous plants. While they primarily target stressed or weakened plants, high population densities often lead to infestations in healthy crops, causing widespread damage throughout agricultural and horticultural landscapes.

The biology of Sphenoptera involves a life cycle that may span several years, depending on environmental factors. Adult females lay eggs on the bark or near the root collars. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the internal tissues, creating complex tunnels that disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the flow of water and essential nutrients.

Typical signs of infestation include the sudden wilting of branches or the entire plant during the peak growing season. Growers may notice sap exudation, stem deformation, or exit holes on the surface of the bark. Left unchecked, the damage severely reduces crop vigor, leads to premature fruit drop, and frequently causes the total mortality of the plant.
