Arabian buprestid beetle

Systematic position. The Arabian buprestid beetle (Sphenoptera arabica) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae, commonly known as jewel beetles. These insects are characterized by their metallic appearance and the wood-boring behavior of their larvae, which pose significant risks to various plant species.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets stone and pome fruit trees. In areas where it is prevalent, it can cause severe damage to commercial orchards, with particular preference for species like apricots, peaches, plums, and other members of the Rosaceae family.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the beetle is closely linked to the physiological status of the host tree. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or on weakened sections of the trunk. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the bark and feed on the cambium layer, creating extensive galleries that eventually impair the tree's vascular system.

Damage and pest status. The damage is primarily caused by larval feeding, which disrupts nutrient and water transport within the tree. This often results in the wilting and death of individual branches. If left unmanaged, heavy infestations can lead to the total decline and death of the tree, especially during periods of drought or environmental stress.

Management strategies. Effective management of the Arabian buprestid beetle requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as regular pruning of infested branches and maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization are crucial for minimizing vulnerability. Chemical control should be timed to target adult beetles before they lay eggs on the bark.
