Systematic position: The apricot buprestid (Sphenoptera foveola) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae (jewel beetles). This species is a highly specialized wood-boring pest that poses a significant threat to stone fruit orchards, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions where these trees are widely cultivated.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest are apricot, peach, plum, and almond trees. While it prefers weakened or stressed plants, healthy trees are also susceptible under high pest pressure. The beetle's ability to thrive in various stone fruit species makes it a persistent challenge for commercial fruit growers.
Biology and life cycle: The insect typically completes its life cycle within the host tree's woody tissues. Larvae overwinter inside the galleries they have constructed within the branches or trunks.
