Cotton stem borer

Systematic position: The cotton stem borer (Sphenoptera gossypii) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae (jewel beetles). It is a specialized pest that causes significant economic losses in cotton-growing regions, particularly in hot and arid climates.

Crops affected: The primary host plant for this insect is cotton (Gossypium spp.). The borer specifically targets the stalks of the cotton plant, attacking it during the vegetative growth phase and sometimes extending its influence throughout the season if conditions favor rapid reproduction.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles feed on the leaves and young shoots of the plant. After mating, females lay their eggs near the base of the cotton stem. Once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the stalk. They complete their developmental stages while tunneling inside the plant tissue, which protects them from environmental stressors and traditional contact-based pest control methods.

Damage characteristics: The damage is primarily caused by larvae that consume the internal tissues of the stem. This activity disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, leading to yellowing, severe wilting, and often the death of the main stalk. Heavily infested plants may break at the base, leading to significant yield losses and poor-quality cotton fiber.

Control measures: Management of the cotton stem borer relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle in the field.
• Rigorous destruction of crop residues and root systems immediately after harvest to reduce the overwintering population.
• Deep plowing to expose larvae and pupae to predators and extreme weather conditions.
• Application of systemic insecticides at the beginning of the larval emergence period.
