Description
Systematic position: The striped buprestid beetle (Sphenoptera lineata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a wood-boring insect recognized as a major pest of woody plants, particularly in arid and semi-arid climates where host trees are already under stress.
Host plants: This pest primarily targets stone fruit trees. Crops such as apricot, peach, plum, and almond are the most frequent hosts. Vulnerability increases significantly in orchards that suffer from poor irrigation practices or lack of necessary fertilization.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern. Adults are active during the warm summer months and feed on the foliage and tender shoots of host trees. Females lay eggs in bark crevices or at the base of the trunk. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the bark and begin feeding on the cambium and phloem layers.
Damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is responsible for the most severe damage. By boring irregular galleries under the bark, they disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the flow of nutrients and water. This leads to the wilting of branches, poor fruit development, and, if not managed, the eventual death of the entire tree.
Control measures: Effective management of Sphenoptera lineata requires an integrated approach:
- Ensuring optimal tree health through regular irrigation and nutrient supply.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested branches.
