Mountain buprestid

The mountain buprestid (Sphenoptera montana) is a serious wood-boring pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. Known for its ability to devastate stone fruit orchards, this beetle has become a significant concern for commercial growers in arid and semi-arid regions where the climate favors its rapid development.

This pest primarily attacks stone fruit trees, including apricot, peach, plum, and cherry species. While it can infest a wide range of host plants, it shows a clear preference for trees that are already stressed by heat, drought, or poor soil conditions, though it is fully capable of colonizing and killing healthy, vigorous trees in cases of high population density.

The biology of Sphenoptera montana is characterized by a one-year life cycle. Adult beetles are active during hot, sunny weather, feeding on leaves and the bark of young shoots. After mating, females deposit eggs in bark crevices, typically near the base of the tree or on major branches. The larvae then bore into the phloem and cambium layers to feed.

The damage caused by larvae is severe, as they create winding galleries that sever the vascular tissue of the host plant. This disruption of sap flow leads to wilting, branch dieback, and in many cases, the total death of the tree. The presence of the pest is often signaled by sap flow, bark splitting, and the gradual thinning of the tree's canopy.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling Sphenoptera montana effectively:

• Sanitation, including the prompt removal and destruction of infested branches or entire dead trees.
• Enhancing tree vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to help trees resist larval attack.
• Applying targeted insecticide sprays during the period of adult beetle emergence to prevent egg-laying.
• Maintaining healthy orchard hygiene to minimize egg-laying sites on the trunks.
