Description
Systematic position: The plum buprestid beetle (Sphenoptera neglecta) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae (jewel beetles). It is a wood-boring insect that causes significant economic damage to fruit-producing orchards, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
Affected crops: This pest primarily targets stone fruit species. Plum, apricot, cherry, and almond trees are the most susceptible hosts. The larvae focus on the sapwood and heartwood of branches and trunks, making it a dangerous hidden threat to orchard longevity.
Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as a larva inside the galleries carved into the tree wood. Depending on the environment, the development cycle can be prolonged. Adults emerge during the warmer months, feeding on foliage and young bark before mating and depositing eggs into bark crevices or pruning wounds.
Damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is the most destructive. By tunneling through the conductive tissues, the larvae disrupt the tree's vascular system. This results in dieback of branches, stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and, in severe infestations, the complete death of the tree due to girdling or internal tissue destruction.
