Wild cherry sphinx

Systematic position: The wild cherry sphinx (lat. Sphinx drupiferarum) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Sphingidae. It is a robust moth species primarily distributed in North America. While its populations are typically stable, the larvae act as specialized folivores on various woody plants, making them a point of interest for orchard management.

Host plants and economic importance: The larvae feed primarily on trees within the Rosaceae family. Key host species include wild cherry, apple, plum, and occasionally other fruit-bearing trees. While they rarely cause large-scale industrial damage, localized outbreaks can significantly impact the leaf surface area of individual trees, leading to growth suppression.

Biology and lifecycle: The species follows a holometabolous development cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are nocturnal fliers that mate and lay eggs on the leaves of host plants. The larvae are solitary feeders; they grow significantly over several weeks, exhibiting distinctive color patterns before burrowing into the soil to pupate and overwinter.

Nature of damage: The damage is caused by the caterpillars' intense feeding behavior. Initially, they create small holes in the leaf blades, but as they reach their final instar, they consume entire leaves, often leaving only the midribs behind. Extensive defoliation can reduce the tree's vigor and weaken its resistance to environmental stress and secondary pathogens.
