Description

Systematic position: This species belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Sphingidae. It is recognized by its distinct aerodynamic body shape and specialized flight capabilities typical of sphinx moths, also known as hawk moths.

Host crops: The primary host plants for this pest are members of the Solanaceae family. It is frequently observed feeding on the foliage of cultivated tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers, as well as various wild and garden plants like mint and salvia.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis. It overwinters as a pupa in the soil. Adults are nocturnal or crepuscular, active in gathering nectar. Female moths deposit eggs individually on the underside of leaves, and upon hatching, larvae begin intensive feeding.

Damage and pest status: The larvae are the primary damaging stage. They possess large, chewing mouthparts capable of consuming significant amounts of foliage.
