Description
Systematic position: The privet hawk moth (Sphinx ligustri) belongs to the family Sphingidae within the order Lepidoptera. It is a large, nocturnal moth species known in its larval stage as a significant defoliator of various ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.
Host plants: This pest primarily feeds on plants in the Oleaceae family, such as privet (Ligustrum) and lilac (Syringa). However, it is a polyphagous insect and can also cause damage to other plants including ash, snowberry, viburnum, and sometimes fruit trees like apple and pear.
Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Adult moths are active during the summer months, usually from June to July. Females lay individual eggs on the underside of leaves. Larvae hatch and feed voraciously for several weeks before descending into the soil to pupate in a chamber, where they overwinter.
Damage and harmfulness: The caterpillars are remarkably large and possess strong mandibles. They can consume large quantities of foliage in a short period, leading to severe defoliation of host plants. Heavy infestation results in reduced plant vigor, stunted development, and aesthetic damage to shrubs and ornamental hedges.
Control measures: Effective management requires a combination of manual and chemical strategies. Cultivation of the soil beneath host plants in the autumn is recommended to destroy pupae. For localized infestations, handpicking larvae is practical. In commercial or larger garden settings, the application of registered insecticides or biological controls is necessary during the early larval stages.
