Description

Spoladea (Spoladea recurvalis), commonly known as the Hawaiian beet webworm, belongs to the family Crambidae within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in many tropical and subtropical regions, where it frequently infests various crops due to its high reproductive potential and adaptability.

The pest targets a wide variety of host plants, including vegetable crops like beets, spinach, and sweet potatoes, as well as legumes such as soybeans and cowpeas. The larvae are particularly destructive, consuming large portions of leaf tissue and potentially causing severe economic losses in both horticultural and field-crop settings.

The biological cycle of Spoladea is rapid, with eggs typically deposited in clusters on the underside of host plant leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously on leaves while often webbing them together for protection. Depending on environmental conditions, the insect can complete its life cycle in just a few weeks, leading to multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

Damage caused by Spoladea involves extensive defoliation and leaf skeletonization. When larval populations are high, they can completely strip a plant of its foliage, which severely limits the plant's photosynthetic capacity. This impact leads to reduced yield quality, stunted growth of tubers, and reduced seed weight in leguminous crops, often rendering the harvest unmarketable.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Spoladea outbreaks. Recommended strategies include:

  • Deep plowing of fields after harvest to bury and eliminate overwintering pupae.
  • Rigorous weed control, focusing on alternative wild host plants within the Amaranthaceae family.

  • Targeted application of biological insecticides, such as Bt-based formulations, or chemical pesticides when scouting reveals populations exceeding economic injury levels.
