Description

The Hawaiian beet webworm (lat. Spoladea recurvalis) is a moth belonging to the family Crambidae. It is a highly migratory species and is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in tropical and subtropical regions, where it can complete multiple generations within a single growing season.

This insect primarily infests plants in the Amaranthaceae family. The most susceptible crops include sugar beet, garden beet, chard, and spinach. Furthermore, wild hosts such as pigweed (Amaranthus spp.) and lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album) play a critical role in the insect's population dynamics.

The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae feed gregariously on the foliage. As they grow, they web the leaves together, creating a protected microenvironment which significantly increases their survival rate against external factors.

The larval feeding causes severe skeletonization of the leaves. By consuming the parenchyma and epidermis, the larvae reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity. In instances of heavy infestation, the entire crop may be defoliated, leading to stunted development of root systems and significant economic losses in yields.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Cultural practices such as early planting and rigorous weed control are the first lines of defense. When economic thresholds are met, the application of chemical insecticides should target young larvae before they begin to create protective leaf webs.
