Star weevil

The Star weevil (Starioides degenerus) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized for its adaptive capabilities in various agricultural environments, often posing significant challenges to crop health management.

The pest primarily affects a range of crops, with particular impact on legumes and various field plants. Both adult weevils and larvae contribute to crop damage, though the nature of the injury varies significantly depending on the developmental stage of the host plant and the pest's life cycle.

The life cycle of the star weevil involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs typically as adults within the soil structure or beneath plant residues. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on developing foliage, later ovipositing into plant tissues.

Economic damage is caused by the consumption of leaf tissues, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, and by larval feeding on root or reproductive structures. Severe infestations often result in stunted growth, compromised flower formation, and ultimately, a significant reduction in harvest yield.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective strategy for controlling this beetle. This approach includes implementing crop rotation to interrupt the life cycle, executing deep plowing during fall to destroy overwintering sites, and utilizing targeted chemical treatments when population thresholds are exceeded to minimize environmental impact.
