Stator

Systematic position. Stator (lat. Stator) belongs to the family of seed beetles (Bruchidae) within the order of beetles (Coleoptera). These insects are specialized pests whose life cycle is intrinsically linked to the seeds of legume plants, where they undergo their primary stages of development.

Affected crops. The main targets for this pest are members of the Fabaceae family. Stator beetles favor the seeds of various wild and cultivated species, including diverse varieties of beans, acacia, and other legumes. The larvae are capable of developing inside the seed, effectively destroying the nutritional value and viability of the grain.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Stator is closely tied to the seed maturation phase. The female deposits eggs directly onto the surface of the pods or individual seeds. Upon hatching, the larva bores through the seed coat and penetrates the interior. Pupation occurs inside the grain, after which the adult beetle emerges by boring an exit hole, ready to reproduce.

Damage and harmfulness. The damage is caused by larvae consuming the internal endosperm, leaving only the outer shell. This leads to a total loss of seed germinability, reduction in grain weight, and significant degradation of product quality. During the storage of infested batches, the insects can multiply rapidly, spoiling large volumes of grain and reducing its commercial value.

Protection measures. Managing Stator populations requires an integrated approach combining preventive and chemical control methods:

• Sanitation of storage facilities to remove seed debris and dust where pests may harbor.
• Conducting fumigation of stored grain stocks using registered insecticides.
• Ensuring all seeds intended for planting are certified and free from infestation.
• Maintaining strict temperature and moisture control during storage to inhibit pest development.
