Stator pygidialis is a species of beetle belonging to the family Bruchidae, widely recognized as a significant pest of various leguminous crops. These beetles are notorious for their ability to colonize seeds both in the field and within storage facilities, causing substantial economic losses in agricultural sectors globally.

The biological cycle of this pest begins with the female depositing eggs onto the surface of developing seed pods. Once the larvae hatch, they bore directly into the seed, where they undergo development through several instars. Because the entire larval and pupal stages occur inside the seed, the external damage often remains hidden until the adult insect emerges.

The life cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity levels. In optimal conditions, the insect completes its development cycle rapidly, allowing for multiple generations per year. This reproductive capability makes Stator pygidialis a persistent threat, especially in warm storage environments where generations can overlap and population density can skyrocket in a short time.

The primary damage caused by these beetles is the internal consumption of the endosperm and the destruction of the embryo. Visually, infested seeds can be identified by the characteristic exit holes created by adults. This physical damage compromises the germination rate of seed stocks and significantly degrades the nutritional quality of grain intended for human or animal consumption.
